A big win for the "Way Too Much Fun" racing team Final qualifying and elimination's Day two of race one saw final qualifying elimination's run under perfect conditions. The air was cool but the sun was out warming the track nicely. The biggest question in the final round was would Michael Peck get his championship FED to hook up and run a number quick enough to make the field. The 2011 champ was down to his last shot and was dumbfounded as to why he could not get his car to hook up. It all became just a bit of drama to start the day as he hook up strong and ran to a 6.62/209 to move into the #4 spot in the field. #1 qualifier Brent Murray opted out of the final session so they would be ready for elims. Quentin Chambers repeated with another 6.20 pass, this time a 6.25/219. Dane Lachelt was looking for his second solid pass but he could not get it as he shook the tires and coasted down track. Marty Zazula repeated to the hundredth, with his second 6.63. They were ready. Steve Kendall found an intake gasket leak when he warmed up his car, so he thrashed to get it repaired for round one (he made it). And Kevin Chambers ran a 7.18 so he was ready as well. Frustrated with not getting down the track in two of his runs Dane went out for another shot and this time hooked up and ran a 6.41 so the team had to runs to tune from new. This attempt would not count toward qualifying though, as it was not run during one of out regular sessions. Final qualifying Brent Murray Naniamo

Elimination's: Running on a Sportsman ladder the day got a bit exciting as the ladder generated was wrong. It transposed a couple teams position in the field so the pairings were wrong. Luckily it was noticed and the necessary corrections were made....WRONG!!! just and we pulled into staging I noticed a second mistake so two of the teams were still wrong. That was not good. It did get corrected, and I apologize to the teams for the second mix-up in the lanes.
Brent Murray had the seven car field #1 qualifier bye run. Quentin Chambers faced Marty Zazula. Dane Lachelt took on Steve Kendall and Mike Peck faced Kevin Chambers. Brent Murray took it easy on his run, just staging the car and clicking it off. He knew he would have a tough battle with the winner between Lachelt and Kendall so he wanted to save parts.
In that match-up, both Lachelt and Kendall had solid lights but as the weather warmed up Kendall's car fell off his earlier numbers, and Dane took the win 6.453 to a 7.208.
Kevin Chambers had the daunting task of taking on the 2011 champ Mike Peck. He had a great light (his first race on a pro tree (he went .025) while Peck was a bit late and then boiled the tires.
(you can see the tires waddled up here at 60 feet) Kevin went through the 1320 with a 7.287 and he was off to the semi finals. The final pairing was a great race.
Quentin Chambers and Marty Zazula did solid burnouts and got pre-staged Zazula went in first and Chambers followed. Zazula left first but was a bit late on the tree.
Quentin was also a bit late but was .05 better. It looked like it was Zazula's race, but right at the stripe Chambers reeled him in for a .006 stripe. About 16 inches at 200+ mph. Semi Finals......In reality it was the finals......Say what!!!!!.... In a real strange turn of events one semi final pairing never turned a tire and that meant the other semi final would determine the event champion. The first pairing saw supposed to pit the brothers Chambers against each other, but upon returning to the pits Kevin Chambers found out his fuel tank had suffered a crack in it due to tire shake on his run in round one. That meant Quentin would get a freebie to the final round, all he had to do was stage the car. That turned into the second strange happening in that semi final pairing. When Quentin tried to fire his car it would not fire. He and the team tried for a number of minutes but not dice. So without him staging the car under its own power, that left the other semi final pairing to determine who would go to the final and in turn win the event.
Murray vs Lachelt...... These two local drivers had faced off before and they both knew what was at stake....A win and a free shot in the final round. The series organizer actually determined that the final itself did not have to be run (They do this in NHRA competition when scenarios like this happen). So the points lead and the winners share of the cash was at stake.
After strong burnouts by both cars both staged and Dane Lachelt went in first. Brent brought the RPMs up in the clutch car staged and then had to wait for .24 as Lachelt dialed a 6.39 to his 6.15.
Dane had a great .016 light, and then Murray was off. By half track Murray had closed the gap by about a tenth of a second but he had a long way to go. By 1000 feet the gap was a bit tighter but he was running out of race track. At the stripe Lachelt eased slightly of the gas (at around 1280 feet) but he had enough of a lead to take a .027 Victory.
He ran a 6.47/213 to a dead on 6.150/228 for Murray. The .113 holeshot meant the "Way Too Much Fun Racing" team had a bunch in the bank. It was a good thing he had the great light too as the fuchsia colored digger fell of by almost a 1/10th in performance.
(as you can see in the top left the win light and the scoreboard shows Lachelt numbers first while Murray's has yet to light up, I know I should have had both socreboards in full view, I never said I was a good photographer) The Kelowna team was not satisfied with the win though they really wanted to run a low 6.30 or better, so they said they would make a final round single just to see if they can get their tune-up a bit more dialed in. They made a game effort to rotate the earth, but the car spun the tires just off the starting line so they coasted down (all the while knowing they had already won). Congrat's to the "Just for Fun" team and kudos to the Murray for their runner-up and for setting the assoc et and mph records. The
next event is a big one. It is the Langley Loafers 25th Anniversary race at the
Eagle Motorplex June 8-10. The Outlaws should have 9-12 cars in attendance.
May 5-6, 2012 Well the first day of the 2012 season did not look good for at least the first seven hours of the day but by the time we got to run (at approximately 4:15 pm) it was an awesome opening two rounds of qualifying. race one. Nine cars were in attendance (plus one Alberta member signed up), and Brent Murray in the "Thriller IV" looked to be the first guy to battle for what will become a huge battle for #1 qualifiers honors. Running a new fuel system and blower combo, he ripped off a 6.60 clicking it off at 900 feet and costing through at only 155 mph. He was going 189 to half track. A pair later, series rookie Quentin Chambers in his blown RED launched wheels way up side by side a wheels up launch by Marty Zazula,
The car settle down around 150 feet and Chambers tripped the 1320 timers with an awesome and career best 6.20/219 blast. Zazula went a very strong 6.60/204.
Series sponsor Steve Kendall in the newly decaled Summit RED was running his small 427 motor in his 2010 Spitzer and he was hoping to run quick enough to make the 7.25 cut line (his big motor should be ready for race to in four weeks). He needn't worry about the "Baby Bullet" as the timers lit up to a 7.03, over 2/10ths quick than he had ever gone before in the lil guy. Did I mention the corrected air was around -500ft. Chambers brother Kevin was too anxious in his first run with a pro tree, as he left before the tree was activated. Mike Peck, 2011 champ, was loaded for bear, but he got a bit loose at 400 feet and was forced to coast down track.
Dane Lachelt, was the last guy in round one and he went 6.44/211 to sit #3 after the first session.
Greg McLean was working on getting his NHRA short wheel based license in his bad ass Blown Altered. He is hoping to be ready for race two at the Plex. Leo Grocock was the final guy in the group, and was busy in the pits getting his trans and electronic wiring sorted out and continued on that path through the rest of the day.
In round two the sun finally came out putting a bit more heat on the track and it paid off big time for Brent Murray he Ripped off a career best in 'Thriller" an awesome 6.14/230 (big speed) to take over the #1 spot inn qualifying. Quentin did not get his maintenance between round fully completed to his liking so he sat out round two.
Zazula was in the same vote as Chambers. Kevin Chambers waited for green this time and ran a 7.13 to sit #6. Steve Kendall coaxed a bit more out of his small bullet and ran a great 6.98/191.
To say he was happy with his little motor was an understatement. Dane Lachelt was looking for the moon in run two, and he rotated the starting line with tire smoke and spinning tires. He second run ended early.
Mike Peck really wanted a solid lap in round two, but he had another troubled hit with the new Hoosiers. He again was forced to lift early and coasted to a 9 second et. Sunday morning will see the final qualifier at around 11.00am and then the crew will be in elimination's.
